Love Your Garden This April

Spring is a busy time in the garden! The weather is finally improving, so it’s a great time to enjoy the great outdoors. Here is a list of jobs to do – and enjoy – in your garden this April…

1. Lawn Care

Rake out any dead moss with a scarifier and then fork over to improve drainage. It’s also great to give your lawn a dose of lawn fertiliser. Mow your lawn more regularly as required, lowering your towards the end of the month. Remember - your grass cuttings are ideal for composting! (Try our award-winning compost converter.)

2. Flower Power

Now it the time to plant perennials, grasses and summer bulbs. Half-hardy flowers can be sown in trays and kept on a windowsill or in the greenhouse. Remove any faded flowers from early-flowering bulbs, especially daffodils. If you want them to naturalise, then leave flowers on snowdrops, crocus and other small bulbs. Try planters for a decorative wow-factor for your outside space.

3. Sowing Seeds

Early sowings outside may prove difficult due to the cold and wet soil at this time. Use cloches to warm up the soil of prepared areas, leaving them in place for at least two or three weeks. Then, the soil can be raked prior to seed sowing and planting out of young seedlings. Replace the cloches giving the young plants a good start.

4. Grow Your Own

Now is the time to sow direct carrots, peas, beetroot, winter cabbages, broccoli, salad crops and much more. Marrows, courgettes, pumpkins, squashes and tomatoes can all be sown in a heated greenhouse or propagator.

Plus, you can work at a comfortable height with our raised beds. Our Ergo raised bed can be flexibly expanded in height and length and can also be used as a composter.

5. Weeding

Keep on top of your weeding. Doing this regularly will mean a weed free plot, and nowhere for pests (especially slugs) to hide. Even better - our Easy Fill Bag Loader turns a standard bin liner into a rigid container that stands up on its own. It keeps your hands free for loading and your bin liner puncture-free!

6. Take Time Out!

Don’t forget to take a few moments to sit and relax after your hard work.
Enjoy watching your garden come to life this spring, spotting the early growth and colour of spring. Use our sturdy boot scraper and boot pull to ease off your boots and put your feet up!
